People around the world will come together from 6th to 8th October to make a noise about the plight of the West Papuan people. This year Rockin’ For West Papua 2017 events will be held in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, The Netherlands, England and Scotland, with more than 20 shows in Australia alone!
With genres ranging from reggae, RnB, country and heavy metal to hip-hop, DJ’s and Aussie rock, it is going to be LOUD!
West Papua is Australia’s closest neighbour and in our own backyard more than 500,000 West Papuans have been murdered and they daily face the threat of being punished with 15 years jail simply for flying their own flag.
Award-winning documentary Producer of “Punks For West Papua” and Rockin’ For West Papua organiser Ash Brennan said, “as well as being the biggest thing I have ever organised, it is the biggest music event for West Papua that the world has ever seen. For 3 days in October, it’s gonna be loud! I want to thank not only the bands but all the promoters, venues and local organisers that have come together to make Rockin’ For West Papua 2017 a global event”.
All money raised goes to the United Liberation Movement for West Papua. The money is used for film training in West Papua and the ULMWP’s travel to vital meetings in the Pacific, and to the UN in New York and Geneva.
“Indonesia has tanks and guns, we West Papuans only have guitars,” Benny Wenda – Leader Free West Papua Campaign, Spokesperson for the United Liberation Movement for West Papua.
